From Japanese tearooms to ramen bars

13. September 2023, 17:00–19:00

Talk and discussion

Come to this talk and discussion by Prof. James Farrer (Sophia University, Tokyo) and Lenka Vyleťalová (UP) and learn how Japanese cuisine conquered the world over the past one and half century.

Served in over 150,000 restaurants outside Japan—from simple eateries to fine dining temples—Japanese cuisine has become truly global. The biggest boom has happened in the past forty years, but the roots of the considering and consuming the Japanese culinary products as something fasionable are much older. The speakers of this talk (also authors of chapters in the recently published volume The Global Japanese Restaurant: Mobilities, Imaginaries, and Politics) will share rich ethnographic data from six continents and illustrate how over one and half century the Japanese food conquered the world.
