Sending of crisis alerts

UPlikace enables Palacký University to communicate with its students and employees in crisis situations. In case of danger or a serious operational event in any of the university buildings, it sends users a message containing basic information and instructions on how to act based on their settings.

Crisis messages in the UPlikace do not take priority over any instructions from the integrated rescue system (fire brigade, police, paramedics)!

For more information, see the detailed article and FAQs below.

FAQ about crisis alerts

Why can't I find any of the buildings where I have teaching or work duties in the crisis module of UPlikace?

Buildings and places that are not found by the user in the UPlikace crisis module are not included in the system because they are not under the administration of Palacký University and the University cannot guarantee that it will learn about an emergency in such a building in time to inform its students and workers. Typically, this is the case, for example, in the ice rink or swimming pool.

The Holice (Šlechtitelů) area is then listed as a single site in STAG and therefore also in the UPlikace. The user who has it marked will receive a notification about what is happening in any of the buildings there.

What buildings do I have set up in the exam period?

Buildings from the previous semester (including those added manually by the user) remain active in the exam period. At any time, you can add additional buildings valid for the current term and then remove them again in the More – Emergency Alerts menu in UPlikace.

How do I reconfigure my buildings in the new semester? What if I forget?

In the first week of the new semester (when the schedule creation and changes are finalized), students and teachers willl have automatically added the new buildings where they have classes according to STAG. The user then has the option to remove the selected buildings that they no longer attend that semester from the menu at any time. Likewise, he or she can add additional buildings valid for the current term. So if you forget, nothing happens, you will have more buildings marked than before, not less.

Why doesn't the UPlikace send a message exactly according to the current location of the phone?

The university is not authorized to do this; only the Integrated Rescue System can use automatic identification of location by mobile phone to send crisis messages.

What does it mean if I enable loud notifications when the sound is off?

Crisis messages in the UP application are of two types. The first uses normal notifications that behave according to your vibration/sound and volume settings. The second type is an urgent crisis message that alerts you with an alert sound, even if you have your ringer muted, all sounds muted, or Do Not Disturb mode turned on. You can enable or disable this option at will – the wizard in the UPlikace will help you do so.

What exactly does the warning sound sound like? You can listen to it here.

What if I'm off campus or on vacation? Will I be disturbed by a forced loud notification at the cinema or a conference?

Yes, you will be disturbed. However, the use of crisis messages (especially those with forced notification) is expected to be used only in rare cases.

Of course, there is an option to disable the forced loud notification for a certain period of time, but we recommend that you remember to reactivate it when you return to the university.

For which phones is the UPlikace designed? What if I don't have a smartphone?

The crisis module in the UPlikace is available for Android (version 8.0 and higher) and iOS (version 15 and higher). If you do not have such a phone, you will not receive a crisis message. However, the purpose of the crisis module in the UPlikace is not, and it is not technically possible, to cover 100% of the people present at the scene of an emergency. However, the more users who receive the message, the more likely they are to spread the information to others in their area.

Crisis messaging works for everyone who has downloaded the UPlikace?

It works for all those who have logged into the UPlikace with their university login: students of Palacký University, its lecturers and other employees.

It does not work for unregistered users of UPlikace, applicants and graduates.

Do I need to have an active internet connection to receive a crisis alert?

Yes, it works just like any other notification on your phone – you can use your own data as well as university or other wi-fi.

If I have an UPlikace installed but not running (I don't have it open or between running apps), will I get a crisis message?

Like other applications, UPlikace receives notifications even when it is not running directly. However, this may be affected by system settings for battery optimization/saver. Therefore, UPlikace will prompt you in the wizard to turn off battery optimization for it. This means that the operating system will not restrict it from running in the background in order to save battery, and therefore not receive notifications.

In which language will the message be delivered?

A bilingual version of the message in Czech and English will always be delivered – regardless of the language settings in the operating system or UPlikace.

What if the crisis situation ends?

After the crisis situation is over, users will receive another notification that the problem or danger has passed and it is possible to return to normal mode. If further action is required, this will be indicated in the message.

Do I have to follow the exact crisis message/instruction in the UPlikace?

You always need to keep calm and use your own common sense. React on the spot as the situation develops. Messages are sent out by selected and trained University staff in communication with other University staff, but they may not have the most up-to-date information on the situation as it develops.

In no case is the message in the UPlikace superior to information or alerts from the integrated rescue system (fire brigade, police, ambulance service). In the case of parallel announcements via sirens, local radio, targeted SMS messages from the integrated rescue system, etc., follow these instructions.

A crisis message sent by UPlikace will not save you on its own, its purpose is primarily to inform students and those working at the university as quickly as possible about an emergency in a given location or building so that they can be alert and respond in a timely manner.

Who should I let know if I see a crisis, dangerous or suspicious situation myself?
