Along with the beginning of November, the acceptance of applications to our university has also started. Our team of ambassadors is therefore presenting UP to interested parties at the Gaudeamus fair in Brno until Friday. At the last management meeting on Wednesday, October 25, there was a discussion about the credit bank or the future details of drawing funds. ERMS application downtime (file service) 3–6 November 

The ERMS application (filing service) will be unavailable from Friday 3 November after 5pm until Monday 6 November – a new version will be deployed. At the same time, some functionality of linked systems (SAP, STAG, CES, etc.) will be temporarily restricted. In case of problems, please contact the UP helpdesk team.

Participate in a study on the prevalence of inappropriate forms of behaviour in the Czech academic environment – also in EN 

The investigation on gender-based violence, which is the first of its kind in the Czech academic environment, was launched by the National Contact Centre – Gender and Science of the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS). The research is conducted at public universities and institutes of the CAS and is intended for students and employees, including non-academic staff, both domestic and foreign. You can fill it out whether you have experience with gender-based violence or not. It is open until 30 November, see the article for more information and links.

E-mail collection of university reputation data is underway

Times Higher Education (THE), which publishes one of the most respected global university rankings, will be collecting data on the reputation of universities (including ours) through a survey over the next three months (November–January). We ask all staff members who are selected and contacted via email to participate by completing the survey to contribute to the shape of THE's rankings for the coming year. Do you know of an interesting thesis? Help publish it in book form

Have any of your students written an interesting Master's thesis that could be categorized as Life and Chemical Sciences, Non-Life Sciences, or Humanities and Social Sciences and defended between November 1, 2022 and October 31, 2023? Advise them to enter the Academia Publishing competition, in which it can get a book form and get distributed. Not only factual accuracy is judged, but also readability and the ability to engage the reader. Entries are open until 15 November 2023. LECTURES AND COURSES

Lecture by Šimon Pánek, director of People in Need – on 2 November 

Šimon Pánek, co-founder and executive director of the humanitarian organization Člověk v tísni (People in Need), will deliver the annual lecture (in Czech) that UP organizes once a year in honor of Josef Ludvík Fischer, the first rector of the restored University of Olomouc. It will take place in the auditorium of the UP Faculty of Law on Thursday, 2 November at 6 pm. Admission to the lecture is free, reservations are recommended. For those who cannot get to the auditorium of the Faculty of Law, an online broadcast will be prepared.

How are the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment reports produced?

Come to a lecture by Radim Tolasz, Czech climatologist and meteorologist and representative on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC regularly publishes climate assessment reports – the latest one is 7489 pages long and involved a total of 842 authors. How are these reports produced, where is the data obtained, how are they vetted and who approves them? Open Science Training workshop series 

The Department of Conception and Support and Research, together with other units of UP, is preparing systematic training in the field of open and responsible science. It is intended not only for male and female DSP students and aspiring scientists at UP, but also for all those who are interested in topics related to open science and research data. The training consists of ten lectures/workshops, which will take place every Tuesday in November from 7 November to 28 November at the Envelopa Hub. AFOcinema: Oppenheimer – free for employees. Already on November 2! 

Thanks to the year-long project of the Academia Film Olomouc AFOkino festival, you can attend a screening of one of the most successful films of this year. Oppenheimer will be screened on Thursday, November 2 at 7:30 pm at the Metropol cinema. The screening of the film is free of charge for UP employees (+1 person as a companion), if you are interested please fill in the reservation form (in Czech). Do you know the "Nicholas Winton of Olomouc"? Květa Bartoňová (in Czech), a student of pedagogy, rescued 45 orphans from the Dukla Pass after World War II. Her story and the fate of two other women who were affected by the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century will be told in the comic book Three Queens (in Czech). You can contribute to its publication in a collection announced by our long-time partner Memory of the Nations Central Moravia. Among the rewards, you will find not only a comic signed by the authors (and also UP alumni), but also a candlelight dinner in the civil defence shelter in Bezručovy sady.
