Dear employees,

Welcome to the newsletter that comes to you at the turn of the winter and summer semesters. For some students, classes have already started, while for others it will be in the coming days. In the coming months, as the schedule of the academic year and the university calendar suggest, we are expecting, for example, the UP Academic Week or the university sports day, associated with the Majáles (May Fest) and the Rector's holiday.

Only until Sunday 11 February you can visit the exhibitions Temple of Wisdom and Symbols of Wisdom (in Czech), which were prepared on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the University of Olomouc.

WHAT'S GOING ON AT UP

Briefly from the UP management meeting

At the last management meeting on Wednesday 31 January 2024, the creation of the positions of University Ombudsperson and Faculty Sustainability Coordinators was discussed. In collaboration with the Department of Lifelong Education and Innovation in Teaching, a series of training sessions on safety issues at the HEIs has been initiated. Read the full summary (after logging in the UP Portal), we will prepare another one for you again in 14 days. More detailed information will subsequently be available in the minutes of the management meeting in UPShare, as well as in the minutes of other bodies, in UP standards and documents and on other information platforms.

Everyone can choose from the programme of the UP Academic Week

A representative UP ball, free admission to the Olomouc Museum of Art and the Fort Science, a screening of the film Brutal Heat or a discussion with Mark Orko Vácha await us all during the UP Academic Week – from 19th to 25th February. There will also be a Mass for the University, a special pub quiz and the long-standing Donate Blood with the Rector challenge, which you can still sign up for. The full programme for the week can be found on the website.

Why Academic Week and why in February? It commemorates the reestablishment of the University of Olomouc after the Second World War, which took place with the adoption of a special law on 21 February 1946. Between 1860 and 1939, only the theological faculty functioned in Olomouc, after which Czech universities were closed by the occupation administration of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. What happened next? Check out the beautiful timeline of the university's history (in English!).

Go on Erasmus – an offer for everyone working at UP!

Thanks to the fact that you are working at UP (either as academics or as a THP), you have the opportunity to take part in a study stay or training abroad within the Erasmus+ programme in the academic year 2024/2025. Training stays take place at UP partner institutions, training can take place at the university or in another organisation (company, NGO, research institute) in the form of shadowing activities, individual training or a collective event organised by the institution (Staff Training Week – for example on this portal). The selection of staff is the responsibility of the heads of the individual departments; in faculties, the selection is usually guaranteed by the departments or the international departments. On the International Cooperation website you will find the conditions for teaching and training.

Last chance: watch the 450-second film about UP and vote

450 seconds. This is the title and the length of a short film created by students of our university during its 450th year. The production involved three student teams from three different faculties, working together under the auspices of the Audiovisual Production Department of UP. Each team chose a time of day – morning, afternoon or evening – which they worked on in their part of the film. Check out the result and take part in the voting on which third of the film you liked the most.
