Discussion on the representation of science in the media and its reception by society
The Department of Media and Cultural Studies and Journalism at the Faculty of Arts invites you to a discussion with experienced practitioners and distinguished personalities of Czech science journalism and popularization on the topic of how science is represented in the media and how it is perceived by Czech society.
What is the image of science in the (Czech) media? Are all sciences equal in the media? How is the Czech society's trust in science and scientists? What role does the media play in shaping public opinion about the need for science? And of course - why to popularize science at all and how to do it in the best possible way?
Not only these, but many other questions will be asked to our exclusively assembled panel of discussants!
The session will take place on 4 December 2024 from 13:15 to 14:45 in lecture room 2.05, in our department at Křížkovského 14.
And who will be speaking on these important issues? We've invited the biggest aces in the field:
- Tereza Mašínová - graduated microbiologist, co-founder of the SciComHub consulting platform and science journalist and popularizer for the portal Vědavýzkum.cz. She has experience in connecting science, media and society from the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic.
- Vendula Lužná - also a graduate molecular biologist and geneticist, who got her first professional spurs in Olomouc. She recently returned here as a newly appointed science popularizer at Palacký University.
- Petr Koubský - one of the most visible and respected science journalists in the Czech Republic (and a lecturer at our department). Winner of the Ferdinand Peroutka Prize for his coverage of the covid-19 pandemic. He has been writing for Deník N since 2018.
- Petr Bilík - a long-time teacher and expert in film studies at the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at the Faculty of Arts, but also a university manager, specialist in university PR and external relations, including popularization. He also participated as its director in the development of the largest festival of scientific films AFO.
As all the guests have mainly rich practical experience, the meeting will also have a workshop character. We invite not only students, but also colleagues from other departments of FF UP.
