Exclusively for children and adults fleeing the war is the "Ukrainian Library", which can now be found in the Armoury at the main lending desk. Currently, there are forty titles in Ukrainian, which the Palacký University Library has purchased.
"Almost as soon as the open conflict in Ukraine has started, there was a huge wave of solidarity and aid everywhere. So we started to think about how we can also get involved in this help and we decided to help in the best way we know how - with books. At the beginning of March, we started looking for available publications in Ukrainian in the Acquisitions Department. After about three weeks, the first titles arrived, which we can now offer to Ukrainian children and adults," says Antonín Pokorný, head of the Acquisitions Department of the UP Library, who initiated the idea of the Ukrainian library.
He adds that in addition to language textbooks, the Ukrainian library also offers a variety of fiction, including several volumes of the popular Harry Potter series. "We tried to choose from the available books in a way that would suit both adults and children. Through the Department of Slavonic Studies, we have provided several children's storybooks directly to Ukrainian parents and children in local accommodation," adds Pokorný. Although it is difficult to obtain Ukrainian literature in the current situation, the Acquisitions Department of the UP Library would like to add at least forty more titles to its current offer.
Borrowing books from the Ukrainian library takes place at the main borrowing desk in the Armoury in the name of the interested party, so you need to have a valid document (passport or ID card). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 585 631 749.
The Palacký University Library has nearly two thousand titles with Ukrainian themes in its permanent collection for students and academic staff of the University, three quarters of which are in Ukrainian.
