Mountain glaciers have a delayed response to climate change: they are expected to continue to melt long after greenhouse gas emissions have stopped. In this presentation, I will discuss the impact of climate mitigation action on global glacier change, and its consequences for both sea-level rise and regional water resources. On the one hand, glaciers are expected to melt by a consequential amount even if we achieve the Paris Agreement goal of holding global-mean temperature below 1.5 or 2 °C. On the other hand, early climate mitigation will have large impacts on both long-term and short-term glacier melt, with benefits for glacier runoff and water availability at all timescales. Mountain glaciers are clear witnesses of the urgency to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions as early as possible.
